On August 1st, Switzerland celebrates its National Day, marking the foundation of the Swiss Confederation. This festive day is highlighted by political speeches, bonfires, fireworks, lanterns, and a variety of other activities.
Historical Background
The origins of this national celebration date back to 1291, when the cantons of Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden pledged mutual assistance in times of danger. This oath was taken on the Rütli meadow above Lake Lucerne. Every year, a speech by the President of the Swiss Confederation is traditionally held at this historic site, and the national anthem, the "Swiss Psalm" composed in 1841, is sung.
Each canton, and often each municipality, has its own unique traditions and customs to celebrate this national holiday.
